A practical AWS and DevOps review for growing teams
Review delivery pipelines, cloud reliability, security and spending with a prioritised plan instead of a tool-shopping list.
Understand the system first
Map the applications, environments, accounts and dependencies that support the business. Identify who owns each service, how changes reach production and what happens when a deployment fails.
Review observability and recovery alongside spend. A low-cost configuration is not an improvement if it undermines an agreed reliability requirement.
Find and prioritise opportunities
Use billing and utilisation data to investigate idle resources, oversized workloads, data transfer and storage choices. Examine deployment frequency, manual steps, infrastructure drift and privileged access. Quantify each opportunity where data allows, including effort and risk.
- Record the baseline and business constraints.
- Test a small change before broad rollout.
- Define alerts, rollback and operational ownership.
Make delivery repeatable
Infrastructure as code, a reviewed delivery pipeline and useful monitoring can make changes more repeatable. These practices should reflect the team’s capacity and security needs, rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
